The Discerning Parent's Guide to Books

About Us

Have you ever wanted to know what was in a book before you read it or recommended it to someone else?

We have, and so we’ve created The Discerning Parent’s Guide to Books.

This site will tell you all you need to know about a book before you buy it, or pass it on to your child.

Each book posted on this site has been read by one of our reviewers and has been given a Classification Rating, a Difficulty Rating, and Bibliographic Information*.

Classification Rating:

Our Classification Ratings are based on those used by the Australian Classification Board for Films. While our terminology is the same, we have no official connection to the Board, and they have not endorsed any of the views or opinions on this site.

G – General. Content is very mild in impact.

PG – Parental Guidance is recommended for younger readers. Content is fairly mild in impact by may contain material that is confusing or upsetting for young readers.

M – Mature. Content is moderate in impact. Contains material that requires a mature perspective and may be inappropriate for young readers.

M+ – Extra Maturity. Contains material that we consider to be unsuitable for reading by persons under the age of 15, though for books there is no legal restriction. Content is strong in impact.

R – Caution should be taken. While there may be no legal restriction on books placed in this category, we consider that these should only be read by adults and that adults should be discerning with the content. Content is very strong in impact.

Difficulty Rating

All of our books have been rated according to the difficulty of the structure and language (not content) for the average teenage – adult reader.

1 – Easy

2 – Confident

3 – Proficient

4 – Challenging

* Bibliographic information includes the date of first publication, unless the version we are reviewing has been altered since first published. The display pictures of each book will not necessarily match the publication date given.
